I lived in the old Mallala school house from just after my birth in 1948 until my family left the town in August 1958. I was born in the Queen Victoria hospital, my middle sister was born in the old school house in April 1951, and my younger sister at the Mallala hospital in October 1953. My maternal grandfather was Leslie Alfred Williams. I believe the information that my grandfather was head master from 1939 until 1958 is incorrect. I was always told that my mother's family moved to Mallala in 1934 and my grandfather was the head master for 24 years, which I believe would still make him the school's longest serving head. My father who was born in Victoria was in the RAAF and stationed at Mallala, my mother's younger sister was married to Don Pitt. Mrs Kitty East of East Bros connection was my teacher in grades 3 and 4, and other notable people I can recall, were the doctor in the very early 1950's was a Dr David who was a close relative of the famous Adelaide surgeon, and that well known South Australian footballer Don Lindner taught for two terms at the school in the mid 1950's. Even though I left Mallala more than 59 years ago l still feel some affinity with the town.
