In November 1950, part of the Northern Section of the Royal Australian Air Force Base at Mallala was converted to accommodate newly arrived European migrants immediately on their arrival in Australia. The women and children lived at the camp whilst the men found employment mainly in the city. The Migrant camp closed in early 1952. Some of the families stayed in Mallala to become respected and well loved citizens.
