I attended Lower Light primary school from 1953 to 1956 during the time of Joe Costello, he also had a son in attendance but I remember little else about him. There were also students by the name of Harts who lived in or near Two Wells. End of year performances were held in a church nearby. One thing I can remember about those days was how we all had to be self reliant as one day I cut my finger rather badly using a pocket knife and Mr Costello simply dipped it into a cup of kerosene then bandaged it, telling me to carry on,there was no ducking down to the nearest surgery for stitches! I lived on the Lower light side of the river so had to cross the ford on my pushbike and when the river was up I used the swing bridge which was great fun. The only other highlight from that period was receiving a small bible signed by Mr Costello on the occasion of the Queens visit. In terms of skills learnt I would have to say it was writing with pen and ink as was the practice in those days, Mr Costello was a stickler for neatness and we had to practise "light upstrokes and heavy down strokes" I miss those innocent years of growing up in a small country school as it helped shape my life.
