A long lost photograph taken in 1897 and developed at Marchant's Studio in Gawler.

W G Payne, the resident partner and manager of an adjacent chaff mill, built the large house on the north-eastern side of the Barnet Road railway crossing. E H Coombe’s History of Gawler states “Mr Payne is an enthusiastic amateur gardener, and his shrubbery and garden are much admired by passing railway travellers”  In the background is Gawler racecourse whilst it was still mainly grazing paddocks and before any amenities were built.
