The Mallala Museum is planning for the project “The Domestic Homefront during Wartime“. A grant under the History SA’s Community Museums Program was received for the design and the development of the display.

The Paint Shop Gallery (Shed) will be transformed into areas representing a kitchen and laundry, a time line of items used in those areas and an interpretative display of the development of the East Bros Company.<br>

The members of the Committee are guided through this planning stage by the illustrations and plans of the talented designer Peter Templeton.
Gallipoli Crossing - Do you know when and why it was named?
In the Mallala area it is a well known and accepted sign for a location.
The disappearance of the sign and the desire to install a replacement has resulted in some puzzling questions.

It was considered to have been named in recognition of the WW1 invasion at Gallipoli. “The landing of the Anzacs at Gallipoli coincided, when the railway construction had reached that point." Quoted from P36 of the book “To South Australia’s Shore They Came.”

A grant to finance the replacement required research for qualified information to be presented in the application.
In newspaper The Register Tues 22 June 1915 p6 quoting:

"RAILWAY WORK PROGRESSING

Operations in connections with the Salisbury to Long Plains Railway, authorized by an Act in 1913, were commenced at the Salisbury end on April 23 last. The line is to be 34 1/2 miles long."<br>
The line had not reached the site Gallipoli Crossing.

The Rotunda was initially used as a shelter for the Mallala Croquet Club, which was located in what is now the Children’s Playground at the Mallala Oval Complex.

We believe the club closed during the early years of World War Two.

&nbsp;
In the mid 1940’s the Mallala Bowling Club was formed and the Rotunda was later donated to the Bowling Club for its members to use

&nbsp;

In the year 2000, the structure was donated to the Mallala Historical Society and repositioned to the Mallala Museum to preserve its heritage.
In the early days of settlement washing was not the easy process it is today as there were no washing machines.
On washing day the wood copper was lit and kept burning as long as required to provide hot water for the washing tubs, one on each side of the stand.

The scrubbing board was in one tub and the clothes would be rubbed with a bar of soap and then the dirt loosened by rubbing on the corrugated glass board. Clothes would be wrung out by hand, placed in the second tub and rinsed in the clean water.

When the hand wringer was invented it was placed on the partition between the tubs and the clothes fed through the wringer to remove most of the water.
It was necessary to be careful feeding the clothes through the wringer or the fingers could be caught and squashed.

When the early hand operated washing machines were invented the clothes would go from the washing machine through the wringer and into the tub to be rinsed.
The majority of the new settlers in the Lower Light area were of the Primitive Methodist faith and so a small timber structure was built for their use on Section 393 on land donated by J. Braund of Prospect. It was built by W.B.Town and had rafters of pine, a thatched roof and gravel floor. The first trustees were James Braund, Charles Jacome Cooper, Benjamin Milton, John Pratt, Joseph Richardson, William Broadbridge Town and James Wilson.

A small stone church was built by Jonathon Porter and the foundation stone laid by Reverend Warner. A larger stone church was built in 1874. The builder was Nicholas Sawton and the cost was 344 pounds. Additioned trustees appointed were M.N. Davis, E.L.J.Badman, W H Wasley and Francis Rowe. The Reverend Wayland was the minister.

The year 1900 saw the Primitive Methodist Church, The Wesleyan Methodist Church and the Bible Christian Church amalgamate to form the Methodist Church of Australia.

Increasing population in the area found the stone building to be overcrowded and inadequate so the final large church building was erected in 1910. The foundation stone was laid on 30th March 1910 by J.H. Bottrall and the silver trowell used at the ceremony is on display at the Two Wells Uniting Church. The stone for the building came from the property of Samuel Frost senior. The builder is unknown but the carpenter was Mr. Burton of Mallala The church was opened on August 17th 1910 by Mrs A.W. Wellington. The first two early structures had been demolished and so remained the old church used for Sunday School and the new building. The minister at the time was Rev. J. McIntosh.

The windows in the new church were beautifully patterned leadlight; two in the front of the building, three on either side wall and two over the back doors.

Lighting had progressed from candles in the first church to kerosine lamps and later carbine in the new church. Three services each Sunday were held with special church and sunday school anniversaries.

Fundraising began in 1922 by the Ladies Guild as a new organ was required, the original one being purchased in 1898.

Following the advent of the motor car people were not so reliant on the local church for religious and social events and gradually the church attendance began to decline.

The Lower Light Methodist Church closed in 1962. Sadly the church and Sunday School buildings no longer exist. The beautiful stainded glass windows were broken by vandals and the building damaged and the trustees made the decision to demolish the buildings.

The seats from Lower Light Church are now used in the Two Wells Uniting Church. A stained glass window was commissioned in remembrance of the Lower Light Church and placed in the Two Wells Church.

John Gordon built an entrance wall to his property with some of the stone and a plaque with relevant inscription is placed on the wall. Mr Gregor of Reeves Plains also used some of the stone for additions to his house. Following demolition the land was eventually sold.
The land for the cemetery site was acquired in two stages. An acre of land, identified as part section 570 in the Hundred of Grace, was purchased from Edward Amand Wright with the certificate of title issued on the 28th September 1869. It was entrusted to a group of men who were the trustees of the Feltwell Primitive Methodist Chapel. On the 29th December 1941 the trustees of the Mallala Methodist Church transferred the title to the District Council of Mallala. The second piece of land was added when the sale and transfer of another part section of 570 took place on 20th August 1976. The 1.2ha of land was bought from Ernest George Wesley Earl and increased the area of the cemetery to1.6ha.

During Word War 2 a dedicated section of the Feltwell Cemetery saw the establishment of 12 grave sites which honour the men of the RAAF. The fenced garden area has two capped pillars standing either side of the entrance and one of the attached bronze plaques is enscribed with the following message.

&nbsp;

"When the second World War ended in 1945, the total number of Australians serving the RAAF was 154,511, of whom 137,208 were serving in the South West Pacific theatre, the majority of these aircrew and support personnel were based and trained at a number of Airforce training establishments scattered throughout Australia. During the second World War the RAAF had some 6,200 personnel killed in action.

During the second World War, 1939-1945, the No6 Service Flying Training School of the Royal Australian Airforce was based at Mallala.

The Mallala War Cemetery contains 12 war graves, all of which honour men of the RAAF. Most of those buried here died in air training accident."

A stone with a plaque identifies the Feltwell Chapel and School as former organisations which had existed at the cemetery site.

In 2004 a Memorial wall was erected to inter the ashes of a family member.

The signage "FELTWELL CEMETERY" was constructed by Basset Welding and Fabrication, Lewiston in 2005.

<u>&nbsp;</u><u>It seems appropriate to add the following information:</u>

The name Feltwell occurs as a village in Suffolk, England which derives&nbsp; from the Old English felt, a name of a plant and&nbsp; wella- spring

The 1 acre of land was obtained for the consideration of the sum of five shillings sterling and was transferred to the trustees John Standrin of TwoWells, a Minister, John Forby; Joseph Miles; Thomas Lewis; John Jeffries and Job Pratt all of the Hundred of Grace&nbsp; Mallala Farmers.

The names of the trustees were changed in a document&nbsp; on 9th January 1900 and the new trustees were William Robinson Stephenson; Alfred Vawser; Frederick Vawser; John Jenkins&nbsp; and George Weatherall Lindsay.

When the land was transferred to the District Council of Mallala the current trustees were John Henry Neild; William Thomas Shapley and William Orange Harris who were&nbsp; Methodist Ministers residing in Adelaide. The Mallala Council undertook to assume&nbsp; all the responsibilities of the cemetery for no monetary consideration.
The new Two Wells School was opened on November 2nd 1979 by the Minister of Education Mr. Harold Allison. Planning for the new school had been assisted by the parent commitee from the former Two Wells school, and the school council was involved in tendering for contracts involving the initial planting of 700 native trees around the perimeter of the new block and then the landscaping and water reticulation system for the ovals. The Principal at the time of the transfer from the old to the new school was Mr. Alan Young. During the eight years Mr Young was appointed to the Two Wells, the school went from strength to strength and with the new buildings and changes in educational outlook a new era of education had begun.

Mrs Christine Lidas joined the staff in 1979 and began also teaching Greek culture. From that time, staff members with migrant backgrounds have been teaching those cultures and languages where possible. Miss Kath Cannizzaro joined the staff in 1983.

Through the years the academic progress of students has been nurtured together with their sporting prowess. The school has for many years combined with neighbouring schools in competitive sports and encouraged physical fitness. some former students who have succeeded at sport include Raymond and Mark Prior, Central District league football; Wayne Prior, SA State cricket team and member of Packer cricketing organisation; Gary Sharpe and John Mihaljevic, State junior hockey (1978).

On 8 June 1983 the Two Wells-Mallala &amp; Districts Community Library was formally opened at the school by Mrs Joyce Batty. The school council named the library building `The Alan Young Building' and invited Mr Young back to unveil the plaque commemorating the occasion. Recently the library has been relocated from the school grounds, to the former Two Wells Institute building.
Arthur Weatherill came from the branch of the Weatherill family living in Canada and was the nephew of Mallala's Primitive Methodist Minister, the Reverend Thomas Weatherill. The Reverend's daughter Mabel met her cousin when visiting the extended family in Canada and she and Arthur were married in New York. They came to South Australia to live in 1911 and lived in Cleveland House, Mallala.

Arthur was nicknamed “Marker” because of his billiard room businesses, but he also worked at various times for East Bros, Curnows Garage and later as an agent for East Bros.

When the second story of Cleveland house was demolished, the stone was used to build Arthur's new home at 9 Balaklava Rd. Mallala.
In 2007 the District Council of Mallala purchased the building and it remained vacant until it demolished in 2009 by the Council.

The area was levelled and rubbled to accommodate a building which is used as office space by the council. A car park for Council Staff has been located on the site.
There has been consultation with the community for the development on the site.
Between March&nbsp;and May of 2010 there was great activity on the site. A rotunda with seating was set in pride of place surrounded by a paved area,&nbsp;then landscaped garden beds were placed around the perimeter. A low wall built from the limestone and red brick retrieved when the building was demolished makes a focal point.
At the meeting on 6th June 1884 an Institute Committee was formed with the following personnel holding office: Mr W.Simmons as chairman, Mr T Diment as Secretary and Mr E.G. Everett as Treasurer. It was decided the building was not to cost more than 400 pounds and the building committee comprised of Mr.G. Baker, Mr Williams, Mr.White and Mr Fabian. Mr.George Baker, who had donated the land for the School, Church and the Institute laid the foundation stone on the 7th August 1884 at 2:30pm and the social event was followed by a Dinner at 3:30pm and a Lecture at 7:00pm.

A report in a newspaper illustrated the committee showed committment to the project. " Windsor Institute- A little over two months ago a few persons formed themselves into a committee and passed a resolution to build an institute at Windsor. They went to work with a will. the result being that walls of the building are now 7feet high----.The building, which will measure 65 feet and 16 feet high will be sufficiently large to answer all the requirements of the district for many years to come. The cost including the furniture, will be about 500 pounds--- The proceedings for the day resulted in 60 pounds being added to the institute funds." The official opening was held on 1st. January 1885 with the offical guests being Mr.Bagster and Mr.Gilbert who was the local MP for the Division of Yatala. Mr. Simmons , Mr.Everett and Mr. Fabian organised the entertainment and Mr.W. Baker and Mr. Feltus formed the Sport's committee but records of the official opening do not appear in the minute book. It is known that Mr. Burton purchased one gross of wooden chairs and lamps for the building. A piano was purchase by late 1885 and provided the music for balls, dances, socials and musical entertainment.

In 1924 a wizard lighting system was installed with two lights in the hall and one for the stage.

In 1955 a 32volt plant and a two and a quarter hp Ronald &amp; Tippet engine with1000w M&amp;E generator was purchased.

In 1958 the capacity of the fuel tank was enlarged as the former tank had been unable to provide lighting for the entire duration of a function. Within 12 months electricty came to the district and when the power was connected the Ladies Guild purchased an electric stove.

The supper room was added to the Institute in 1935 as a timely addition for the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Institute

The library service at the Institute has a cherished history with the following recorded list of librarians and with a presentation in 1984 to Mrs Erica Baker for her 39 years of community service. Mrs Baker filled the vacancy of librarian at the annual meeting of the Institute in 1944 and continued in the position until the dissolution of the Institute in June 1983.&nbsp;

In 1922 young readers were encouraged to read with a scholarship scheme as an incentive. A Ladies Guild was active pre-war, but a Red Cross group became the major meeting and fund raising body with records for 1942 showing that the RedCross used the hall on 46 occasions during that year.

The Centenary Celebrations of the Institute were held in August 1984 in recognition of the laying of the foundation stone and an amateur hour was the entertainment for the Saturday night. On Sunday a special Centenary Service was conducted by Rev. Kelvin Benn at the Windsor Uniting Church followed by the unveiling of a dedication plaque, at the Cactus Garden, to the memory of Joe Lowey. The Ladies Guild catered for a luncheon where friends met and enjoyed the photographic display. The Windsor community has formed an Institute Committee and continues to ensue the building provides a meeting place and is kept in good repair.

The Windsor Institute Commmittee 2009 is invited to tell the rest of the story.
Parham was proclaimed a township on 27 July 1876 by the Governor, Sir Anthony Musgrave.

The area was once a busy port. It was named after Mr John Parham who transported the first load of wool by ship from Port Parham to Port Adelaide.

The ketches would arrive on the high tide, and then ground themselves on the beach as the tide receded, allowing the wagons to come alongside, to load and unload the cargo. The ketch would then leave on the rising tide.

The early houses of Parham were built of mud and brush, while later on, the houses were of limestone, bricks and also timber framed.

The beach has always been a popular destination for locals in the summer months, and many of the houses now in the town have developed as beachside shacks.
A well known beach for the raking of Blue Swimmer crabs, Parham is now best known as 'The Premier Crabbing Beach'.

It has pristine shallow water on its tidal flats, which is ideal for children, and has its own Social Club. A free camping area is available to travellers at the northern end of the town. It is one of the most popular free campsites in South Australia.
Raymond George Earl was born on 15th August 1925. His parents were Ernest George Wesley Earl (Wes) and Muriel Jane Earl (nee Sowerby). Ray had three siblings: Gwen born 31st January 1924, Kevin 7th September 1931 to 17th January 1989 and Melva 21st February 1933 to 25th July 1947.
They lived in a cottage on Feltwell Road, Mallala, South Australia which was built by his grandfather Charles Earl prior to his marriage in 1896. Ray slept on the front verandah and read by a small lantern ( which he still has,) until his dad enclosed the back area. They had no electricity or refrigerators and relied on kerosene lamps and candles for lighting.

Ray was expected to tend to 150 chooks and gather and chop the wood for the stove after school. He had to walk to the Mallala School in rain or shine. Mr A. V Gent was headmaster and he knew how to use the cane! Pen and ink were used for writing - no biros. He later travelled to Adelaide on the train everyday to attend the Adelaide Technical High School on the corner of North Terrace and Frome road and gained his Intermediate Certificate in two years.

Ray started work in the Mallala Post Office in January 1941 at 19 shillings per week. Mr Jack Ryan was postmaster. When the RAAF training base at Mallala was opened they didn’t have a post office there, so he used to ride his bike out and deliver and receive telegrams and empty the multi coin phone boxes, until the RAAF set up their own post office.

He left the post office at the end of 1942 to help his father on the farm. They still used a team of horses to sow wheat, barley and oats. They also kept pigs, chooks and milking cows. Ray used to deliver milk to the workman’s camp at the aerodrome. The workmen were still erecting buildings although the RAAF had moved in. After the RAAF 6 S.F.T.S. was closed he delivered milk to Algar’s shop. Eggs and cream were sent to Adelaide by train. Pigs and calves and surplus cows were sent to Gepps Cross market (via the carrier Mr Norm Jarmyn,) until they purchased their own truck, a 3 ton ex army Chevrolet.

Social and family life:

For entertainment Ray attended the film shows in the Mallala Institute and practiced gymnasium also held in the Mallala Institute and taught by Mr Cam Huxtable. He attended the many dances and balls held around the district. In the 1940’s Les Duhring, Reg Peters, Brian Blacket and Ray regularly attended the Saturday night dances held in either the Dublin or Windsor Institutes. They travelled in Reg’s old car or Ray’s first car which was a 1928 Chevrolet Tourer, originally owned by his grandfather Earl. Petrol was rationed, so they used to start the car on petrol and change over to kerosene and back to petrol before they stopped. Many a time they had to mend a tyre on the way.

It was at these dances that Ray met Ethel May Parker and after a few years Ray and Ethel were married on a very hot and dusty day at Balaklava, S.A. on 1st October 1949.
They lived at 16 Cameron Terrace for two years then shifted to the farm house on Feltwell Road. Ethel and Ray raised four children Geoffrey, Joan, Anthea and Sharon. They now have nine grandsons and two granddaughters. In the year 2013 they also have two great granddaughters.

Farming:

Ray started farming with the following implements: a seven furrow plough, 21 tyne cultivator, sixteen row combine, an 8 ft header, ten harrows and a team of ten - twelve horses. Also of importance was the six foot binder used to cut hay to feed the horses and 12 cows. Hay was carted by wagon and 5 horses and stacked for future use. Some hay was later chaffed using a 5 horse power Ruskin oil engine to drive the chaff cutter. The horses had to be fed by 5am so they were ready for work. Twenty acres a day was good going. Eventually the horses were sold at Coles sale yards at Gawler (now the site of Coles supermarket) and a Massey Pacemaker tractor was purchased. Kerosene was bought in 44 gallon drums. As well as his own farm he used to sow and cut for hay all the small blocks on Dublin Road. He also cut Mr E.P. Pitt’s stock paddocks on Dublin Road and Balaklava Road, and also the block where John Griffiths lives on Elizabeth Street. Mr Syd Buttle used to keep a few cows there.

In 1943 Ray and his father Wes started share farming Farrelly’s farm on Balaklava Road and in 1949 they purchased a Massey 44 diesel tractor. He believes that diesel fuel was 17 pence a gallon and super phosphate was around 5 pounds a ton. In about 1955 Ray formed a partnership with his brother until Kevin’s death in 1989.

Until 1956 when bulk handling came to Mallala, wheat and barley was reaped into 3 bushel bags and sewn and carted into the railway yard. Previous to the weigh bridge being established the bags of grain were individually weighed and branded with the weight on them and elevated and stacked 20 bags high. They were then temporarily covered with an iron roof and hessian sides until sold and railed to Pt Adelaide. Ray understands that up to 100,000 bags would be stacked some years. He used to help with the out loading of railway trucks.

In the 1960s Ray also farmed the Parker farm at Long Plains. He certainly didn’t have any time to spare until 1974 when son Geoffrey took over the farm at Long Plains. In 1975 some of the land at Mallala was sold to Gilbertson to build an abattoirs which didn’t eventuate, and after a few different owners the A.W.B. (Australian Wheat Board) built bunkers on the site for grain storage.
They then purchased land at Windsor from Dean Williams and relinquished the share-farming. As well as cropping we bought and fattened cattle on the farm at Windsor and had cows and calves mainly at Mahoney’s. We also had 500 to 800 wethers for wool, driving them by road from place to place.

After Kevin’s death in 1989 the partnership was dissolved and Ray retained the Mallala land and the land which was called Mahoney’s on Hall Road. This was later sold to Neil and Brian Tiller.

In 1998 Ray leased the farm for a period of ten years. He eventually sold the farm in February 2007 after it had been in the Earl family for 130 years. The purchasers were Wayne and Mark Heaslip and Peter Irish.

In 1985 Ray cut off three housing blocks from the farm, (all the Council would allow) and built a house on one, and shifted there in January 1986 and leased the farm house. In 2013 Ray and Ethel still live at Dublin Rd. Mallala.

Community:

Ray Earl became a member of the Agriculture Bureau and served as President and received Life Membership. Meetings were held in the Institute Supper room at that time.

He was a member of the Mallala School Committee and was President and/or Secretary for nine years. He was involved in planting and looking after the school oval and among other projects built the fish pond.

In 1977 Ray was elected as Councillor for the Mallala Ward and served for nine years. While on council he was Chairman of the Mallala Oval Committee when the bore was installed and the oval turfed.

Ray was also council representative on the Mallala and District Ambulance Board for nine years. After leaving Council he was re-elected to the Ambulance Board and became Chairman. He was involved in alterations to the centre to accommodate two ambulances. Ray also erected the front steel rail fence, planted the front lawn and cared for it..

In 1971 Ray joined the Mallala Museum Committee and is still a member in 2013. He was President from 1978 – 1992 and again in 1996 – 2007. Ray states that the achievements of this small committee have been outstanding and an asset to the district and it has been a pleasure to be part of it.

Ray was a Justice of the Peace for 22 years.
Awarded Citizen of the month in 1966.
Citizen of the Year 1997 and International Year Volunteer 2000.
Commonwealth Recognition for Senior Australians 2001.

Sport:

When Ray left school he joined the Mallala cricket club and became secretary. However when he married Ethel Parker he transferred to tennis. He was President of the Mallala Club and also Lower North President. He was Captain of Mallala B Grade in the Gawler Association and later captain of a Mallala team in Lower North Association.

Ray started playing lawn bowls in the late 1970s and was President for 2 years, Club Champion three times, night champion, pairs champion also pairs champion with J. McEvoy in a divisional competition. He spent many years watering the bowling green and was greenkeeper for seven years. Ray was made a Life Member of the Mallala Bowling Club.

In 1945 Ray started playing football. He played over 200 games for the Mallala Football Club, won Best and Fairest, also runner up. He was Treasurer for three years and goal umpire for may years. Ray was made a Life Member of the M.F.C. Ray assisted other volunteers in building the original club house as prior to this the change rooms had been under the grandstand.

Ray says "I feel that I have been very fortunate over my lifetime having seen the bad times in the 1930s but also the good years and I have lived through many changes to farming methods and lifestyles.
I have enjoyed my volunteer efforts and involvement in the community".March 2013
On the 23rd. February 1875 land was set aside for the site of the Barabba School and the area comprised two roods 24 perches.

In 1876 tenders were called for the building of the school room and residence. The school room was completed and open for pupils in April 1877 but the residence was not built until 1885. Until this time the head teacher and his family lived in a small house just north of the Barabba Primitive Methodist Church.

In a speech made by Mr J. Dow at the "Back to Barabba" celebrations in 1945 he states:&nbsp; "The residents applied for a site for a school and they were granted a piece of land of about 1 acre. As it was Government Reserve land at the time, the residents said that they would like to have 5 acres. More land was acquired in October 1876.

When the residents of Barabba applied to have a school they were told they would have to raise 100 pound. This was duly done and 80 pound was forwarded toward the cost of the school house, 16 pound for the cost of fencing and 4 pound for an underground rainwater tank.<br>The S.A. Government Gazette of October 5th 1876 states that the tender of Hague and Lake for a school-house and residence was accepted"

The school opened in April 1877 but no Admission Register exists prior to 1883&nbsp;at which time&nbsp;there were 58 children on the roll.

In 1898 Miss Amelia White was appointed to Barabba School as head teacher having been transferred from Watts Range School. She was accompanied by her mother and sister. This began a period of stability as Miss White remained at Barabba School until 1926 when she left the Education Department to marry and live in Western Australia. So ended a remarkable&nbsp;teaching career&nbsp;of 28 years at the Barabba School and involvement in the community.

On October 5th 1901&nbsp;The Chronicle stated: "On Friday, the 10th annual schools picnic was held at Owen - adjacent to the railway line. The schools participating were Alma South, Alma North, Barabba, Dalkey Hill, Hundred of Dalkey, Owen, Pinery and Salters Springs. About 200 scholars were present and with parents and friends the company numbered 500. A programme of sports for the children was carried out and also elocutionary items and singing competitions."

The combined schools picnic at Owen continued to be a popular event.

In&nbsp;1903 The Country Correspondence wrote:&nbsp;&nbsp;"On Friday 2nd October people began to put in an appearance at 9.30 am. arriving from all points of the compass on bikes, horseback, spring carts, spring drays, spring vans and vans without springs! Buggies from the most up to date Marnie to the old family wagonette, to say nothing of sulkies and dog carts. The morning train also adding to the visitors. The city Volunteer Band provided music for the occasion."

On December 12th 1913 the first examinations were implemented for the Qualifying Certificate (called the QC) replacing the Class 5 certificate.

This examination was duly replaced by the Progress Certificate in 1944.

On December 12th 1968 notice was received from the Director of Education that approval had been granted for the closing of the Barabba School as from the end of the school term 1968.
During the early years of settlement the Long Plains people had no public meeting place so all public gatherings and church services&nbsp; were held in Ezekiel Good's barn until the Church of Christ Chapel was built in 1903 on land owned by W.H. Parker, part section 373 Hundred of Dublin.

Fund raising began in the early 1900s to build a hall, but the Great War 1914 - 1918 interupted the money raising while the community concentrated on supporting the Red Cross organization.<br>The decision on the site for the hall was delayed until the route of the railway line was agreed on.

Tenders were called to build a hall on land donated by Mr John Good. Tenders were all rejected and the President Andrew Parker suggested that his farm labourer Mr Bob Duck could be employed to build the walls of the hall. Mr Duck had gained experience and&nbsp; built several limestone sheds in the district. His wages were 2/6 (25 cents) a day over a period of 12 months mostly toiling on his own.

The stones for the building were all dug up with crow bars from the local area and delivered along with the sand and lime by volunteers. Local carpenter Mr Charlie Baker completed the hall&nbsp;with the total&nbsp;cost&nbsp;being 1,200 pounds.

The building was opened in 1923 by Sir Richard Butler&nbsp;and dedicated&nbsp; to the four young men from the area who were killed during World War One.

Over the years all maintenance has been carried out by volunteers.&nbsp; In 1982 Deidre Parker designed a new extension&nbsp;to be&nbsp;added to the western side of the hall comprising a kitchen/supper room&nbsp;and toilet facilities.&nbsp; A brick layer from Pinery was employed but all other work was done by volunteers. At the same time the hall was reroofed.

A quote for the extension had been received for $40.000 but by using mostly volunteer labour it was built for a cost of $16,000.

Since building the extension in 1982 all maintainance of the hall and surroundings &nbsp;has been done by volunteers with labour, materials and equipment all given freely by local people.

The&nbsp;Long Plains Memorial Hall still belongs entirely to the people of the Long Plains district.

Mr Alan Parker has been caretaker of the Long Plains Memorial Hall since 1954 and must be commended for his dedication.
The school was opened by Mr Mitchell, the first teacher in charge, on 28 May 1883, with the students enrolled from a radius of five miles.

The three terms were spaced with one week holiday between them until Christmas when two weeks were taken.

The pupils were divided into five classes with approximately 45 scholars in classes 3, 4, 5 which were taught by one teacher in a separate room to class 1 and 2. The lessons were reading, writing and arithmetic.

In the period 1918 to 1920 the main stone building was enlarged. One wall was demolished so that the room could be enlarged. The bricks, limestone and sand were brought by rail to the station and transported to the site by the male pupils to the school, mainly by horse and dray.

In 1956-57 a transportable classroom and porch was erected on the grounds under instructions by the Public Business Department, Education Branch. When the school was closed in 1973 this building was transported to Mallala to help accommodate the new students. This 1950s schoolroom has now been relocated to the Mallala Museum and houses its education collections.

The photograph of the sundial is included in the article because it recognises the closure of the Long Plains School. The sundial is installed at the Malalal School with engravings to show the distance, the date of closure and the direction of the school in relation to the Mallala School.
The foundation stone of the Shannon Methodist Chapel was blessed by Mr. Joshua Marshman of Mallala on 8th October 1872.

The Shannon Methodist Chapel was officially opened on 17th July 1873 on land donated by Messrs Wright Bros. The original trustees were Messrs G.N. Johnson, N.J.W. Lindsay, J. David, S. Davis, J.P. Sutton, R. Cooper and C. Carslake.

The South Australian Advertiser August 6. 1873 reports: The opening of the new Primitive Methodist Chapel at Shannon's, Hundred of Dublin, was celebrated on Sunday and Monday, August 3 and 4. The chapel is calculated to accommodate from 120 to 140 persons, is a neat structure, substantially built of stone, and covered with slates, and has six Gothic windows and a porch. Sermons were preached by the Rev. S.J. Nicolls, of North Adelaide, to large congregations, a considerable number being unable to gain admittance. On Monday a still larger company were assembled, and did ample justice to the abundant spread of good things provided by the ladies and bachelors. The public meeting which followed, was presided over by Mr. E. Temby, J.P., and the report read by Mr. J.N.Lindsay. Vigorous speeches were delivered by Mr. Geo.. Marshman and the Revs.J.S.Wayland, A.W.Wellington, and S.J.Nicolls, congratulating the settlers on the erection of a religious sanctuary, and urging them to seek the presence of the great Spirit as an earnest of their future prosperity. The financial appeal was made by Mr. Nicolls, and was heartily responded to, £61/16s/10d being the total proceeds of the two days' services, leaving something less than £150 debt upon the building.

An official program printed for the Jubilee of the Shannon Methodist Church held on July 15th 1923 and over a several day period includes the following article written by the circuit minister Rev. F.G. Rogers:

"If it be true that we live in deeds, not years, then the men who pioneered the mallee lands of Dublin (known as the 30 mile scrub) must surely deserve honour. Fifty years ago these fertile plains, now the envy of the agriculturist, securely fenced and subdivided, dotted here and there with comfortable homesteads, many of which have electric light and all modern conveniences, were covered with dense mallee scrub. The adventure proved the acid test of character, and of some it must be said "weighed in the balance and found wanting" but some endured to the winning of success.

Of the enduring few there were some who, while keen on the conquering of the mallee and the growing of wheat, believed that "man shall not live on bread alone" and believed in the communion of saints - saints who countered for something on the business end of a grub axe in the biting cold of winter and the scorching heat of summer, who could make bread and sew in a pine and pug one-roomed hut and wear a smile seven days a week.

But the temple of God made by hands was not as yet built, there was no lofty spire bidding man to look upward to higher things, no sweet music to charm him from the rough conditions of his daily enviroment, but there was something within him that compelled , like Israel's sweet singer to cry: "As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee o God."

Men with hearts big enough to face a mallee allotment are not likely to want something very much for long. We expect them to act, "Act in the living present, heart within and God overhead', and these men acted with the result - Shannon Church.

The real church - a body of men and women who seek to follow their Lord was "born again" (not built) some time previous to building operations starting, and Divine services were held in the homes of disciples.

The homes of Messrs Baker and G.N.Johnson were ever open for the assembling together of saints (and possibly a sprinkling of sinners) with the late Rev. S. Gray being the minister. The growing cause soon demanded a home of its own, and the Rev. S. Gray and Mr. N.Lindsay set forth to spy out the land, and after many inspections decided on the present site.

The ground was donated by the Messrs Wright Bros., but the present trust has quite recently purchased at a nominal figure from Mr Rowe, the fine V-shaped block in front of the church.

Plans and specifications of the original building were prepared by the Rev. J.S.Wayland. The stone work was carried out by Mr. Jonathon Porter, the wood work by Mr. Joseph Smith, and Mr. Uffindale made the furniture.

Messrs G.N.Johnson., N.Lindsay, J.Davis, Stephen Davis, J.T. Sutton, R.Cooper and C.Carslake were on the first trust. The present trust is composed as follows: Messrs G.N. and A.H.Johnson, N.W.Rowe, E.Johnson, H.G.Clark, H.F.Johnson, E.Young, C.W.Burnard and F.Pritchard..

Opening services were arranged for July 17, 1873. The building (although incomplete) was dedicated to the glory of God, and then on the completion of the work, these Israelites (in whom there couldn't possibly be any guile) did it all over again. The opening services were conducted by the Reverends J.S.Wayland and S.J.Nicholls and proved wonderfully successful.

What a record. This is the year of the jubillee - fifty years of the unfailing goodness of God!

Who but the Divine Statist can tabulate the results?

A mere human could possibly detail the number of services held, the names on the church roll, the sums of money raised and spent. What are these compared with the number of hearts comforted, or to the wayward feet who have been lovingly directed in the paths of peace, to that holy joy that filled the spirits of the men and women made jubilant by a conscious linking up with him who set the joy bells ringing in every soul trusting in him?

Yes the year of jubilee has come, and some who were in the church when it was first formed are here today.

Surely that beautiful poetry of the psalmist, "Lord Thou has been our dwelling place in all generations; before the mountains were brought forth, or even Thou had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God", must be living in their thought. Some have passed on to their reward, but of us who remain, what shall be said?

Is it our resolve to "carry on" in the name of the King, in his almightiness and gentleness, believing that the things unseen are the things that count?"

This concludes the article written for the Shannon Methodist Church Jubilee service by Rev.F.G.Rogers.

After 84 years as a place for worship and social gatherings the Shannon Methodist Church closed in 1957 and the building was demolished in 1966.

The inscription on the plaque mounted on a limestone cairn reads as follows: "To the Glory of God this cairn was raised to recall that on this site stood the Shannon Methodist Church from 1873 to 1966"
The Mallala Museum is planning for the project “The Domestic Homefront during Wartime“.

The Mallala branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia was opened on 17 January 1910 at 2 Redbanks Road, and operated until 9 June 1978 from a building consisting of one main room with a small room attached at the rear.

The local traders, farmers and residents regarded the bank as a much needed asset which assisted with the financial management of their personal and working lives. As customers they were able to withdraw money to pay wages and bills. It was a convenient facility for people to make savings and transact loans for purchasing houses, farmland and machinery.

Demolition of the old building commenced on Saturday 10 June 1978. The Manager Mr Don Hassam was overseer of the work in progress which was the building site for the new bank, the demolition of the first bank and then later the merger. Adjacent to the old premises a new building had been erected and on 13 June 1978 it was officially opened by the State Manager, Mr M. Mephan. Mr O. Pitt, who had been the first customer in 1910, was given the honour of cutting the ribbon. Mrs Lorraine Earl was the first customer to make a transaction in the new building.

On 1 October 1982, the Bank of New South Wales and the Commercial Bank of Australia merged to become Westpac Savings Bank. Westpac Bank closed for business at Mallala on 26 September 1997.

Mrs Christiane Boril, her husband and their two small sons left Germany in 1949 to settle in Australia arriving at Port Melbourne .

The family was sent to the Bonegilla Migrant Hostel in Victoria and later transferred to Mildura. While in Mildura, Mrs Boril purchased a teddy bear, a pair of boots and a birthday cake for her son Alex's first birthday. His birthday was celebrated on 28 April 1950 in Mildura.
