The first primary school was started at Paddy's Bridge by the efforts of Mrs Thomas Verner. There were many children in the Paddy's Bridge area and Mr and Mrs Verner offered, if a teacher could be provided by the Education Department, a cottage on their property for the venue. All the families in the district supported her efforts and in 1897 Paddy's Bridge School was established. Miss Blanche O. Ayliffe was the first teacher.

In 1900, a stone school residence and schoolroom combined was erected by the Education Department on land donated by Mr Arthur Pratt. The cost of the building was £498, 6 shillings and 6 pence. Children attended the school from both sides of the river, German Town Hill Road, Reeves Plains, as far south as Mr Jack Secomb's, Mr Len Simpkin's and the Mallala road. In 1921 the name 'Paddy's Bridge' was changed to Korunye as was the bridge and railway station. When the school closed in 1966 the pupils were taken daily by Education Department bus to the [[Mallala School|Mallala School]]. The school still stands but is now a private residence.

Apart from Reading, Writing and Arithmatic, one of my duties as a primary school student was to sometimes turn on the electric stove in the schoolmaster's residence and warm up his lunch ! This did not prevent me getting the cane from time to time.

Korunye School children travelled to school on bicycle,on horseback and on foot from the surrounding farms. My husband recalled the boys sometimes holding horseraces in the paddock during their lunch hour.
The annual Concert was always a big event in the school year and was held in the Redbanks Hall.

The first Primitive Methodist Church in this district was built on the "Butler - Mallala Station",in the late 1850's.Two miles southwest of Mallala in an area known as Feltwell, a Primitive Methodist chapel was built with the cemetery adjacent. The Chapel was also used as a school and was in operation from at least 1869.A third Primitive Methodist church was built in the township of Mallala, and was opened in November 1874 to accommodate the needs of the people living in or near the town, as the Feltwell Chapel was always overcrowded.

Church union occurred in 1900, and the 1908 Mallala Trust meeting gave the trustees permission to build a Methodist church in the town of Mallala to the cost of 650 pounds. The foundation stone was laid by the Governor , Sir Samuel Bart Way, and the church was opened in July 1909.

To-day was a gala day here, on account of the visit of his Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor (Sir Samuel Way) to lay the foundation stone of the Methodist Church. As it was the first visit of a vice regal representative, visitors came from all parts of the district, and the proceedings were of an impressive character.

The Rev. J. Dingle received his Excellency, and after luncheon at the manse an official visit was made to the public school. His Excellency was received by the head teacher (Mr. T. Nevin) and Messrs. H.B. Moody and F. Carter (members of the board of advice). Sir Samuel delivered an address to the pupils and parents on the subject of character-building, and contrasted the methods of teaching and school life of the present with what prevailed in his own schooldays.

At 2.30 p.m. to the accompaniment of the strains of the National Anthem, played by the local band, under the direction of Mr. C. E. Lutz, the Lieutenant-Governor proceeded to the site of the new building. The circuit minister (Rev. J. Dingle) introduced his Excellency, who was then welcomed by Mr. G. Marshman (chairman of the district council) on behalf of the towns-people and district, while Dr. Dawkins spoke on behalf of the Congregational Church. The President of the Conference (Rev. I. Rooney) then asked his Excellency to lay the foundation stone.

Sir Samuel Way, in a stirring address, congratulated the residents upon their prosperity, and drew a vivid picture of the progress which agriculture had made under practical and advanced methods of cultivation. He had been pleased to learn of the loyalty shown by the district in sending several soldiers to South Africa during the Boer war, and had also to express his delight that increased numbers in Methodism had necessitated the construction of a new church.

After Sir Samuel had declared the stone well and truly laid, Mr. A. Dunstan thanked him on behalf of the church members. The following gentlemen also took part in the ceremony: Revs. G. Hall and J. Thorne and Mr. T. Nevin. The new building is being constructed by Mr. G. Cheeney, and the architect is the Rev. T.G. White. When completed it will have a most attractive and effective appearance. Its external measurements are to be 48 ft by 30 ft., and the height from the floor to the ridge will be 39 ft.

After the stone had been laid an adjournment was made to the Institute Hall,where about 500 people sat down to tea. In the evening a crowded meeting was presided over by his Excellency. In an interesting address Sir Samuel Way referred to the fertility of the district and the obligations farmers owed to Professor Lowrie for the introduction of superphosphates, But however much material wealth they might accumulate, the true purpose of life was unattained without due recognition of their spiritual obligations. He hoped their generosity would be such that when the new church was opened it would be absolutely free from debt. 'The other speakers were the Revs. I. Rooney, H. Howard, and T. G. White. Several anthems were excellently rendered by the choir, under the baton of Mr. F. Dingle. The Rev. J. Dingle presented a financial statement to the meeting, showing that the collections at the Sunday services, conducted by the president of the Conference, and the total of that day's proceedings amounted to £63. This with the promises and subscriptions already received, brought the total amount received or promised to date up to£435. The total cost of the new church was estimated at £650, exclusive of sand and -stone, which the members were generously supplying.

In the mid 1950s, A.A. Griffiths and son J.C. Griffiths of "Pine Grove" Mallala purchased an All Purpose Elevator from East Bros manufacturing company of Mallala S.A.

The elevator was used on their farm for three functions:

    1.  Loading bagged grain from the paddock onto a truck

    2.  Shifting bulk grain from the truck bin to the farm storage silos

    3.  Loading small bales of hay from the paddock to truck and/or from truck to haystack

The elevator worked efficiently but was heavy and cumbersome to manipulate.

After the introduction of bulk grain facilities at Mallala in 1957 the elevator continued to be used at times on the farm, moving bagged oats for storage or sale and shifting seed grain into the mouseproof barn to store for the following year.

The elevator continued to be used infrequently on the farm as a hay elevator until J.C. and son A.J. Griffiths made the transition into making large round bales of hay and the productiona of small bales as a large scale operation was gradually phased out.

 

The East Bros Elevator is displayed at the Mallala Museum.

The beautiful ornate pedal organ had been a treasured possesion in the private home of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. George of Woolsheds, Section 677 Hundred of Mudla Wirra. In 1949 their daughter Mrs Blanche Hancock donated the organ to the Woolsheds Methodist Church which was situated near their home and 3 miles west of the township of Wasleys S.A. The organ was used weekly until the closure of the church in 1967 at which time it was donated to the Methodist Church in Wasleys.

Many years later the congregation of the Wasleys Church purchased an electronic organ, but the ornate pedal organ remained on display in the church and was played at infrequent intervals. Over the passage of time the electronic organ was deemed unworthy of further maintenaance so once again the organists reverted to the faithful pedal organ.

The Wasleys Church - now Uniting Church of Australia, closed its doors in 2004 and the congregation kindly donated the organ to the Mallala Museum.

The organ, which is in good working order, is a valued exhibit at the Mallala Museum.

The organ stands two metres tall and the ornate timber top is beautifully carved and sculptured and has a ledge for ornaments and two small inset mirrors. A compartment for music books is concealed by the stand that holds the music. A semicircular protrusion on either side of the ledge would have held a lamp. The lid pushes into a cavity to expose the keys made of ivory.

Friedrich August Kunzag and wife Christiane emigrated from Werben, east of Berlin in Germany, to South Australia arriving at Pt Adelaide in 1854.They lived at Hope Valley where three children were born and then moved to Mt Crawford in 1858 when their family increased with seven more children. It was during this period that the spelling of the surname changed to Konzag.

In 1870 they moved to Roseworthy where Friederich and his third son Friederich August Wilhelm farmed a property 1 1/2 miles west of Roseworthy.

It is believed that the German Wagon was purchased at this time as it was in use on the farm at Roseworthy.

The farmers used the wagon to transport their farm produce to market and for many other daily tasks around the farm.

In 1911 Friederich August Wilhelm Konzag, his wife Minna Louise and family of seven children relocated to Mallala and settled on Section 60 Hundred of Grace, on the eastern outskirts of the township of Mallala.

They brought with them all their house hold effects, farm machinery, horses, wagons and buggies includung the German Wagon.

This was driven from Roseworthy to Mallala by the second eldest daughter Edith Louisa Ellen known as Ellen. (who later married William Verner of Mallala)

The wagon was loaded with goods and hanging from underneath the wagon was a cage filled with live poultry.

The German wagon was used on the Konzag farm at Mallala - possibly until the advent of a tractor in the early 1930s.

Friederich's youngest son Ernest (Ern) took over the management of the farm and he and his wife Doris lived in the farm house with their two children - Esme born 1929 and Bruce born in 1930.

The German Wagon remained unused in an old straw shed on the Konzag farm until 1997 when Bruce Konzag and son Richard donated it to the Mallala Museum. John Angas painted it in the traditional colour of blue with red wheels.

Description:

The German Wagon was made of timber with sides that slightly sloped outwards. Vertical struts framed the sides which were lined with horizontal planks of timber. The tailgate was hinged and opened down for ease of loading. The wheels were made of timber with timber spokes and hubs and steel rims. The body of the wagon was originally painted in the traditional colour blue with the wheels painted red.

Church Pedal Organ

The beautiful ornate pedal organ had been a treasured possesion in the private home of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. George of Woolsheds, Section 677 Hundred of Mudla Wirra. In 1949 their daughter Mrs Blanche Hancock donated the organ to the Woolsheds Methodist Church which was situated near their home and 3 miles west of the township of Wasleys S.A. The organ was used weekly until the closure of the church in 1967 at which time it was donated to the Methodist Church in Wasleys.

Many years later the congregation of the Wasleys Church purchased an electronic organ, but the ornate pedal organ remained on display in the church and was played at infrequent intervals. Over the passage of time the electronic organ was deemed unworthy of further maintenaance so once again the organists reverted to the faithful pedal organ.

The Wasleys Church - now Uniting Church of Australia, closed its doors in 2004 and the congregation kindly donated the organ to the Mallala Museum.

The organ, which is in good working order, is a valued exhibit at the Mallala Museum.

Description:

The organ stands two metres tall and the ornate timber top is beautifully carved and sculptured and has a ledge for ornaments and two small inset mirrors. A compartment for music books is concealed by the stand that holds the music. A semicircular protrusion on either side of the ledge would have held a lamp. The lid pushes into a cavity to expose the keys made of ivory.

In the early days the Mallala Picture Theatre,the business was owned and run by East Bros. in the Mallala Institute.

The screen was at the front entrance to the hall.The stage area was the dress circle, and as the East family was fairly prolific, had most of the seats there on sparrow’s tickets, whilst the general public sat at floor level.

During the early 1940’s “Premier Talkies” of Riverton commenced the showing of pictures at the Mallala Institute.Mr. Len Mullins was the projectionist, who with his assistant and a small panel van travelled the country areas and presented their film programmes on a weekly basis. Their equipment was portable, and each week, usually on a Friday, they would arrive mid morning and set up their projectors and sound system for the evening screening.

In 1946 these projectors, which showed standard 35mm feature films, were installed in the projection room at the Institute and were used for showing the films on Saturday night until the closure of picture nights.

The projectors were manufactured in the 1920s to show “silent films”. With the advent of “ sound films “ in the late 1920s the projectors were modified to run at a greater speed ( from 16 frames per second to 24 frames per second ). Sound heads were also fitted to pick up the sound from the film sound tracks as well as an amplifier and loud speaker. At the back of both projectors are lamp houses in which carbon rods were electrified to produce a very bright light that is required to show films onto the large screen.

The two projectors were necessary when showing feature films. Each reel would take only 20mins and as there could be 5-7 reels in a feature an uninterrupted switch meant going from one projector to the other.

The procedure required skill so that the audience would not notice the swapover.

During the mid 1950s, the Institute took over the running of the pictures and the projection equipment was purchased by the Institute Committee. The projection room floor had to be cemented and a separate film rewind and storage area built to comply with regulations. A new cinemascope screen was installed, together with movable black surrounds so that varying picture formats could be screened. The projection equipment was assembled and fitted with new cinemascope lenses to enable the flood of Cinema scope films to be screened.

Picture shows continued well into the 1960s, but soon, with the advent of Television, there was a gradual decline in audiences. Instead of weekly shows they became fortnightly, and then monthly, until the situation became uneconomical for the film nights to continue.

The WW1 Camera is an exhibit in the Mallala Museum. It was marketed as the Popular Vest Pocket Kodak. The camera was donated by Driver David Moody No.16308, 3rd Australian Motor Transport Company, Australian Army. The Museum has no photographs taken by this camera.

Australia's Official War Correspondent Charles Bean captured the drama of combat through his journalistic skills and Australian readers were eager to know what was happening to their loved ones. The photographs sent back to families by soldiers and published by news papers became another means to learn about these far away places where relatives lived and died.

The museum displays a collection of dramatic photographs taken by Trooper David Crighton, who served in the 9th. Light Horse Regiment. The images displayed were photographed during his WW1 service in the Middle East.

On 30th October 1917 when Christina Grace Roberts married James David Dow at the Owen Methodist Church she wore this wedding dress.

The bride travelled, from her home at Barabba,to the Owen Church, by horse and buggy.Christina's sister Elsie was in attendance as her bridesmaid.

On the rough dusty journey the beautiful wedding gown was protected with a dustcoat.

At the conclusion of the festivities the happy couple boarded the train to travel to Victor Harbour for the honeymoon.

The couple settled at " Warculta " Barabba.

Description:

The ivory moire silk wedding dress comprised of a skirt and jacket with military styling evident in the epaulettes on the shoulder,sleeves and a belt at the waist. The lace jabot and the pearl buttons gave a feminine touch.

The dust coat was made of moire silk with a large collar and decorative top-stitching in a contrast colour. It featured large covered buttons,two generous pockets and an attached belt.

Griggs Thomas

Thomas Griggs was bom at Watton, in Norfolk, England, in 1840, and came to Australia in 1861. His Uncle, who came to Australia in 1849, had written seeking one of the family to come out to him, and being the eldest he was chosen to go.

In the advertiser of 1917, where Thomas recalled his life, he says “ All was excitement when the morning came for me to go away. Mother was persuaded to stay in bed lest the strain should be too much for her and lead to a breakdown, thus preventing my departure. My father came with me to Gravesend, a distance of about 90 miles, and put me on board the Orient, under Captain Lawrence, and bade me goodbye. That was the last I ever saw of my native land and the first time I had seen a sailing ship....We arrived at Port Adelaide, after a passage of about 79 days. I drove in a bullock wagon with my uncle to McLaren Yale....”

He spent only a short while with his uncle, before returning to Adelaide where he had various positions, including coachman for Bishop Short, and then coachman and butler for Dean Farrell. After a short stint working in the farms at Reedbeds, he started building contracting, his first job being the building of a bridge over the Onkaparinga River at Noarlunga, otherwise known as the Horseshoe. His next contract was for the Willaston bridge, near Gawler, followed by the Experimental Farm, Roseworthy. He then went to Lower Light, and, in addition to the carpentering and building trades, took charge of the Lower Light general post office from 1869-1876.

He then relocated to Mallala, where he stayed for about 20 years, during which time he is said to have erected most of the principal buildings in the township, including the Mallala Institute, and the Mallala Post Office. He also constructed the public schools and residence at Lower Light, Long Plains, Wildhorse Plains, and Owen, a Wesleyan Church at Port Wakefield, and residence at Kapunda for Sir Jenkin Coles. While in Mallala he served terms as councillor for the District of Grace , and was also treasurer of the Dublin and Mallala annual shows.

Thomas left Mallala around 1895, because “Mallala became very dull and slack, and I decided to come to Adelaide, where I started contracting”. Some of these later projects included the transept of the St. Augustine's Church (Unley), the director's residence in the Zoological Gardens,the new stores of the Cooperative Society in Angas street, the new Parafield Cemetery buildings, and the Halifax street Methodist Church.

William Raymond Garrett was born at Kew in Victoria. In 1926 he graduated from the RAAF Flying School at Point Cook, and became a commercial air pilot in 1927. He was a member of the Citizen Air Force between 1927 and 1937.

He served at Mallala as Wing Commander and Commanding Officer of the No 6 SFTS from 23 February 1942 to 20 August 1943. The No. 6 Service Flying Training School (6SFTS) had been formed at Mallala in 1941 and had a lasting impact on the township. A total of 2257 trainees passed out before the unit ceased to function on 31 December 1945.

The enterprising Wing Commander was able to build a slide projector for teaching aircraft recognition. He built it in the workshop at Mallala with spare bits and pieces. During his posting at Mallala he was awarded the Air Force Cross and was promoted to Group Captain. After the war Garrett went into business, establishing a photographic chemical firm at Doncaster and subsequently becoming chairman of Ilford (Australia) Pty. Ltd. Between 1954 and 1960 he was a Doncaster and Templestowe shire councillor, serving also as its president from 1955 to 1956. In 1958 he was elected to the Legislative Council as the Liberal Country Party member for Southern Province and held the seat until the 1970 redistribution, when he stood for and won the new seat of Templestowe.

Garrett became President in 1968, was knighted in 1973, and retired from the Legislative Council in 1976. He married Vera Halliday Lugton in 1934, and had four children.

In civilian life he started a photographic chemical business which was absorbed into Ilford Australia Ltd where he became Chairman. He held elected positions in Local Government and the Victorian Parliament. He was knighted in 1973, and when he died in 1994, he was given a State Funeral. His daughters say ” He was a strict disciplinarian but very fair and thought red tape was there to be stretched. He never smoked or drank and I can remember him saying that, as a C.O. of a lot of young lads, he felt if he drank the King’s health in water they could then feel free to do the same.”.

Note: In the RAAF service records and family papers he appears as W.R.Garrett, however he is recorded as R.W.Garrett in papers related to his time as President in the Legislative Council.

Fernandez Dr Myrna

Myrna Fernandez trained in Madras, India to be a doctor. Dr Fernandez later practiced in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Myrna, her husband Eric and three boys Michael, Kirk and Stephen, emigrated to Kalgoolie, Western Australia where some of her family resided. Eventually she moved to the practice at Mallala and took over from Drs John and Jeanette Linn as the resident doctor in July 1969. The family intergrated into the community and the boys went to the Mallala Primary School where they made friends. The delicious very hot curries that the family cooked were enjoyed by the friends as well as the family.

Dr Fernandez came to Mallala with medical experiences gained in many parts of the world, and she continued the dedication to the patients which was started many years before.

She delivered many babies at the Mallala Hospital.

Whilst at Mallala she studied and obtained her Fellowship of the College of General Practitioners,

and was also the Divisional Superintendant of the Mallala St Johns Ambulance Brigade.

She always gave dedicated loving care to her patients. In 1996 Doctor Fernandez moved to Adelaide, and now lives close to some of her family.

In the year 2009, Dr. Myrna Fernandez is still practising part time.

Linn Drs John and Jeanette

In 1953 Drs John and Jeanette Linn bought the Mallala medical practice.

Dr Jeanette Linn continued her studies while in Mallala and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1978.

These two doctors worked arduously and continuously for the district and the hospital for 16 years. During their term in Mallala the St John Ambulance was formed, the Committee for the Ageing was commenced, seven units for the aged were planned, and an X-ray machine was bought.

Drs John and Jeanette Linn instigated the move to form a St John's Ambulance Brigade in Mallala and worked tirelessly for the brigade. They also organised the first pharmacy, which was established in Adelaide Road

Matthew Henry East, who came out from England with his parents, was the founder of East Bros. & Co. of Mallala. His father, Mr East Snr. came to South Australia in 1861, for the Moonta Mining Co., to manage and work the old Parramatta Copper Mines between Wallaroo and Kadina. At 15, Matthew obtained employment in the Moonta Mines Blacksmith Shop, thereby gaining his knowledge of the Blacksmithing trade.

In 1886 he came to Mallala, and with one of his brothers, opened up a general blacksmithing business in the town. After about 12 months he bought his partner's interest and continued business on his own. The chief line of manufacture at this time was the heavy type 3 wheel S.J. Plow. In conjunction with two local farmers, Messrs H.B Moody and G. Bischoff, he patented the prong mould board plough (skeleton board), which was proved to be a gigantic success in heavy sticky soil. M.H. East was among the first of the plough makers to make the stump plow of 4 wheels. The plant in the factory was rather crude, as most of the machinery was designed by M.H. East himself, and to drive the plant a horseworks was necessary. These conditions of manufacture continued for several years, and was eventually replaced by an oil engine.

In 1906 two sons, Messrs R.C. East and R.R. East joined their father in the business, and the trade name was altered to East Bros & Co. From 1906 until the out break of World War I, the seasons were prosperous, and trading in farm implements made rapid strides. 1914-18, the World War I period, manufacturing was somewhat slowed down, because of scarcity of materials. In 1933 East Bros. became East Bros. & Co. Ltd. Mathew Henry East died on the 7th. October 1940, just short of his eightieth birthday. The business he had started continued to operate for a further 30 years, until it's closure on August 7, 1970.

Mathew East was recognised by the Commonwealth for his contribution to South Australia, by the naming on 13 April 1976, of East Place, in Kambah, ACT . In the notes accompanying the dedication of the name, Matthew East was described as a pioneer of Mallala and founder of East Brothers (machinery construction firm), one of the first to make a stump-jump plough; patented a prong-mould board plough and designed early reaper-thresher.

Diseases introduced by white settlers had an immediate impact on the Kaurna. It is almost certain that their numbers were considerably diminished even before white settlers arrived in Southern Australia. Contagious diseases such as tuberculosis, lung infections and venereal diseases took a great toll. The mortality rate went up and the number of children born went down.

They had lost land, tradition, livelihood and with that the basics of all their culture and social supports. Ravages of white man's disease did the rest.

Kaurna's territory consists of around 2800 square miles.

A population of 650 is recorded in the Register of 30 January 1842.

In 1939 the Federal Government established an aerodrome suitable for training pilots, north of Mallala. In 1941, No. 6 Service Flying Training School (No 6 SFTS) was formed.

Australia was just coming out of the depression years, and the advent of the RAAF base at Mallala provided employment for many local businesses, e.g. builders, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, Postal Dept., Railways, Algar's Bakery, J.C.K.Reid fruit and vegetables, E.P.& O.W. Pitt butcher, as well as kitchen staff, cleaning and grounds staff, to name a few.

The role of the Aerodrome changed as the war ended. The 6SFTS unit ceased to function on the 31st December 1945.

As from the 1st January 1946 the role of the personnel at the base served in the Care and Maintenance Unit.

In the following years the Mallala Base was operational for the Royal Australian Air Force and functioned in the defence strategy of the Commonwealth until closure in 1961.

During this period the Commonwealth Government planned that an area at the RAAF Base be established to accommodate personnel seeking settlement in Australia. In 1949 the Department of Immigration commenced the task of altering selected buildings for use as domestic accommodation. The Migrant Accommodation Centre was officially opened on 1st October 1950 amd many families began a new life at Mallala. The project lasted for a short duration because the Department of Defence required the area for other purposes.

The land and buildings were sold in 1961.

Next on the site came speedway entrepreneurs. A racing circuit was laid and big names won big races in magnificent cars, e.g. Lex Davison, Bob James and Frank Matich. The Adelaide International Raceway superseded Mallala, but after a great many hassles, the throb of tuned-up engines and the thrills of speed are back again with sporting car events, motorcycling and Formula 2 & V8 races. The Motor sport park is now a very busy place, with motor related activity on most days of the week.

The Grace Plains Bible Christian Chapel was located 5 miles north of Mallala on land surveyed in 1864.

Pioneers were able to purchase acreage for about two pounds per acre. Mr. Robert Marshman, a local blacksmith and butcher, gave a piece of land for the Chapel to be erected in 1868. The Chapel was opened in November of that year possibly built by Mr.Mathew with much work and material provided by the settlers.

In about 1872 a Day School was opened at the Chapel with about 60 children in attendance . The first teacher was probably a Mr. Adams.

A new Church replaced the Chapel in 1910.

Mrs. Gehan {nee Rose Tiller} who was born in 1884, was baptised in the original Chapel. Rose had married Edward Lewis Irish who died in1941,and sixteen years after Lewis's death, she married again. Her second husband was Bertie Elliott Walter Gehan. She became the first bride married in the new Church.

The Grace Plains Congregation was for a short time connected to both the Balaklava and the Gawler Circuit but in 1887 Grace Plains became the head of its own Circuit. Preaching places included Pinery, Woolsheds and Kangaroo Flat. Social activities in the early years included the Choir, Bible Study Groups, Ladies Guild, Christian Endeavour and the Literary Society. A friendly game of cricket arranged by Mr. G. Broster between the Grace Plains and Barraba Literary Societies was one of the first in the area.

Some of the earliest families to settle at Grace Plains were Marshman, Webster, Worden, Franks, March, Schnieder, Broster, Tiller, Biggs, Bartlett, Adam, Moody, Streeter and Cherryman. The chapel has now been sold and is a private residence.

Richard Butler was the elder son of Richard Butler, farmer, and his wife Mary Eliza, née Sadler. The Butler family arrived in Adelaide on 8 March 1854. Richard attended St Peter's college, and then worked for his uncle, Philip Butler at his property Yattalunga, near Gawler. Richard managed "Yattalunga" from the time of his marriage to Helena Layton of New South Wales in 1879, until after their third child was born. It was about this time that "Yattalunga" was sold to Joseph Barritt. In 1883, Richard and his family moved to Mallala Station, another of Philip's properties, which Richard purchased later. Richard was a Churchwarden and Layreader and his wife an organist of the new Anglican Church of St. Peter. His wife Helena died in 1892. They had eight children before her death. On 7 June 1894 he married Ethel Pauline Finey and they had three children.

Richard was a J.P., active in community affairs, and sometime chairman and Councilor for the District of Grace, and in 1890 he was elected to represent the Yatala constituents in the South Australian Parliament. This electorate was later included in Barossa and Richard was their member for over 30 years. As a token of appreciation, these people arranged for a memorial portrait by George Webb, which was hung in the House of Assembly in 1928.

During his Parliamentary Career, Richard was Premier for a short period in 1905 and held all ministerial portfolios except Attorney-General.

He was Speaker of the House when he lost office in 1924.

He was knighted in 1913.

Sir Richard Butler was recognised for his sound though frugal administration, for the building of the Outer Harbour, once named "Butler's Folly", and for the locking of the River Murray.

In 1839 Joseph Chivell and his wife Ann Bennie (nee Goard), and their 6 children left Cornwall for Australia, travelling on the 'Java' and settling in Peachy Belt, South Australia. Samuel was 7 when he arrived in SA. When gold was discovered in Victoria, Samuel headed to Bendigo, returning to marry Mary Ann White in 1853. Mary Ann died the following year, soon after the birth of her daughter Mary Ann. Samuel remarried to Elizabeth Jury in 1854. After farming in Peachy belt, Samuel and Elizabeth moved to Mallala about 1863. They settled on Section 60 in the Hundred of Grace, living at first in a pug and pine hut. A short time later he built the first stone house in the township. Samuel was very active in civic activities, and was councillor for the first Council of the District of Grace. He was instrumental in obtaining the services of a surveyor of roads and an inspector of works. Samuel was considered the richest man in town, and named many of the streets after his family. He is credited with the layout of Mallala's intersection where eight roads meet. He invested heavily in a flour mill, the tallest building in the town, and his daughter Mary Ann laid the foundation stone, however this proved to be an unsuccesful venture. Samuel was a butcher and farmer, and built a butcher shop, which has continued to operate as a butchers until recent years. Gradually his wealth, and his health declined and he died in 1880, aged 48. He is buried in the Feltwell cemetery at Mallala.

Section 103 Hundred of Grace was first taken up by an Adelaide land agent, Edward Amand Wright in 1861. He leased this section to Charles Tilley for a term of 10 1/2 years for '£1000 to be paid evenly each year with the right to purchase. Charles Tilley, a farmer from Pinkerton Plains, built the Seven Stars Hotel from the local limestone and timber in 1865. The hotel was so named because seven roads joined up at that site.

The building was situated north of the intersection on the Mallala-Gawler Rd at Redbanks.

The premises comprised a huge square building and included fourteen guest rooms and lots of chimneys, a long bar, a licensed billiard room, and dining room with a large jarrah dining table. The front room was large with a wide bar, the full length of the room. The timber was also thick and in later years was worn to about one inch deep where the kegs were placed each end. A billiard room was also licensed. It became a stop over where the drivers rested and socialised while the bullocks were watered and fed. To water the horses and bullocks a quarter of an acre from an adjoining neighbour was bought and a well dug. The hotel had a large square underground tank to provide water for the house use. A wooden trough was near the road hewn from a large single tree. The stables were about two chains long, all made from local materials.

May 1877 saw the completion of the first public school and residence in Mallala. 

The cost of £936 was partly contributed by the residents and the first teacher appointed was Mr Jas Phillips and the first name on the school register was Annie Eliza Harris. 

At this time the Central Board of Education was in operation and its inspectors were authorised to keep a tight reign on teachers and pupils alike. 

On two dreaded occasions per year schools were visited and standards were checked, children examined and percentages of passes would affect the teacher's salary. 

In those days fees of 4d to 6d a week were collected, with exception being made for the very poor.

During the term Mr David H. Adams was headmaster, the Dublin Board of Advice came into being, comprising of Messrs John Forbes, William Temby, George Marshman and Samuel Gray. 

However, according to a letter to the Minister of Education dated 31 January 1883 the chairman and only one other member appeared to be attending meetings and inspecting schools regularly.

The system of using young monitors seemed very popular in the early days with some being paid by the department, some by the head teacher, while some worked just for the honour. 

By 1892 the Mallala school district was gazetted and this incorporated surrounding schools.

Mr T. Nevin, an obviously progressive headmaster, gained a holiday for his pupils on 29 July 1908 to celebrate the opening of the People's Park. 

This project and many other innovations about the town are credited to his enterprise. 

He is remembered for his donation of the turret and spire on the Methodist church and, oddly, for his seemingly unending supply of white peppermints.

 

The attendances greatly increased during the time the RAAF station was in operation and classes were seriously overcrowded.

In 1966 the Education Department began closing small schools and the first students to be transported by bus to Mallala were from Korunye and Reeves Plains schools. 

 

Then followed the closures of Grace Plains, Windsor, Dublin and finally Long Plains. 

With more enrolments and a substantial Commonwealth grant, many amenities were added, including more classrooms, a turfed oval, and a greatly upgraded library.

May 1877 saw the completion of the first public school and residence in Mallala. 

The cost of £936 was partly contributed by the residents and the first teacher appointed was Mr Jas Phillips and the first name on the school register was Annie Eliza Harris. 

At this time the Central Board of Education was in operation and its inspectors were authorised to keep a tight reign on teachers and pupils alike. 

On two dreaded occasions per year schools were visited and standards were checked, children examined and percentages of passes would affect the teacher's salary. 

In those days fees of 4d to 6d a week were collected, with exception being made for the very poor.

During the term Mr David H. Adams was headmaster, the Dublin Board of Advice came into being, comprising of Messrs John Forbes, William Temby, George Marshman and Samuel Gray. 

However, according to a letter to the Minister of Education dated 31 January 1883 the chairman and only one other member appeared to be attending meetings and inspecting schools regularly.

The system of using young monitors seemed very popular in the early days with some being paid by the department, some by the head teacher, while some worked just for the honour. 

By 1892 the Mallala school district was gazetted and this incorporated surrounding schools.

Mr T. Nevin, an obviously progressive headmaster, gained a holiday for his pupils on 29 July 1908 to celebrate the opening of the People's Park. 

This project and many other innovations about the town are credited to his enterprise. 

He is remembered for his donation of the turret and spire on the Methodist church and, oddly, for his seemingly unending supply of white peppermints.

 

The attendances greatly increased during the time the RAAF station was in operation and classes were seriously overcrowded.

In 1966 the Education Department began closing small schools and the first students to be transported by bus to Mallala were from Korunye and Reeves Plains schools. 

 

Then followed the closures of Grace Plains, Windsor, Dublin and finally Long Plains. 

With more enrolments and a substantial Commonwealth grant, many amenities were added, including more classrooms, a turfed oval, and a greatly upgraded library.

The building now housing the Mallala Museum was originally erected in 1878 to be operated as a flour mill. As the nearest flour mill was in Two Wells, the Mallala Milling Company was formed to process the grain locally.

A capital of £10,000 was decided upon and 2,000 shares were available for purchase at £5 each.

It was financed by the local farmers, and it is reported that Samuel Chivell invested heavily in the project.

James Martin & Co in Gawler were the successful tenderers to build the mill and machinery.

The three story mill was built of hammer-dressed limestone with brick quoins and cement dressing. At the rear of the building was a shed which contained a large Cornish boiler 26 feet long and 5 feet 6 inches in diameter. This drove a horizontal engine of 22 horsepower. Samuel Chivell's daughter Mary Ann laid the foundation stone.

The Mill was formally opened by Mr.W. Cavenagh M.P. on Tuesday 18th March 1879.

On the 2nd. September 1880. the boiler exploded, damaging the works, and the chimney. The Chimney was rebuilt with several steel bands placed around the top, for extra strength. The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser reported the incident "A boiler burst to-day at Cowan's mill at Mallala. The engine and boiler houses were completely destroyed. Tho engine-driver was in the engine-house at the time, but escaped with a few bruises"

Unfortunately, although it was a necessary facility, it did not prove profitable. The Mill only operated until 1887.

The difficulties and cost associated with the transportation of the goods were the limiting factors which forced its closure.

The mill was then purchased by Deland and Black and the equipment was dismantled and transported to Blyth.

Council records show that Mr J.J. East, policeman and brother to Mathew Henry East, purchased the property in 1887 and it was later used by East Bros & Co Ltd.

In 1948 the tall chimney at the rear of the mill was demolished by the owners East Bros & Co Ltd.

East Bros. used the building for storage and a paint shop until 1969. Then after the formation of the Mallala & Districts Historical Society the building was used by them as a Museum.

The District Council of Mallala purchased the building when East Bros & Co closed in 1970 to enable it to continue to be utilised as a Museum. The new Museum was officially opened in 1971

The building is now listed on the State Heritage Register
