The Barabba Post Office opened in 1877 with the mail being dispatched weekly on Saturdays.&nbsp; In November 1971 when consideration was being given to its closure the postal authorities said: [The] non-official office serves a farming community of 12 households (including the Postmaster). Mails are exchanged six times a week with Adelaide (inward mail is resorted at Balaklava) ...

The office was erected by residents in 1926; prior to this it was conducted in a room in the school which opened in 1877.
The above Post Office was known as Barrabba from 1877 - 1887 after which the spelling changed to Barabba. When the railway was built from Hamley Bridge to Balaklava the mail was carried by train. This service commenced in 1879. The early postal service was run from the pantry on the verandah of the school house and from 1898 to 1922 school mistress Miss Amelia White provided this valuable service.

In 1926 when school teacher Mr John Trainer came to Barabba he required the use of the pantry so the people built themselves a small wood and iron structure measuring&nbsp;9 ft. x 8 ft. on the corner diagonally opposite the school house. They purchased and installed letter boxes as the post office was only open for 1 hour&nbsp;per day. In the beginning there were three mail runs a week from Stockyard Creek and later this became a daily service.&nbsp; In the 1960s the Barabba post office,&nbsp;and the Stockyard Creek post office were closed as recognized offices and a roadside delivery was provided from Owen.
<div>A general meeting was held in the Barabba school room on Tuesday 14 June 1927 to discuss whether some form of sports could be played at Barabba during the winter months.</div><div>Mr A. H. Wall was elected chairman of the meeting with Mr J. P Trainer as the minute secretary. It was proposed by Mr E. Munday and seconded by Mr J. P Collins that Barabba form a football club and get a team together to play football against neighbouring clubs. The general meeting was then closed and the people present formed themselves into another and proceeded to elect the officers and committee to start the club. Mr E. Munday was elected president, Messrs A. H. Wall, E: Sorrell and J. D. Campbell were elected vice presidents and Mr J. P Trainer treasurer and secretary. Practice captain was Mr A. H. Wall; vice captain was Mr D. J. Wilson.</div><div>The colours chosen for the guernseys and shorts were navy blue and either sky blue or royal blue with white shorts. The first subscription for membership was 5/- per member. Thirty-four men and boys were elected to be members of the club.</div><div>A working bee was arranged for the last Saturday in June 1927, with a practice afterwards. Mr J. J. McCabe volunteered to find out the distance in length between the goal posts. It was found that the oval had to be lengthened and quite a number of trees had to be grubbed out to obtain the required area.</div><div>No further meetings were held until 19 April 1928, when most of the officers were re-elected except that Mr E. Sorrell was elected secretary. After some discussion it was agreed to try to enter a team in the Gilbert Football Association. Also it was decided to seek some help from Hamley Bridge to obtain several more players to make up the team. The meeting was then adjourned until after the association's delegates meeting to which two members of the club were sent as delegates.</div><div>The meeting was resumed two weeks later when it was proposed A. H. Wall, seconded E. Sorrell that Barabba go ahead with plans to enter a team in the association of Gilbert and some players be obtained from Hamley Bridge.</div><div>The annual subscription was reduced to 2/6. Mr George Lindman joined the club and was appointed captain. He was a lightly built man and played in black canvas sandshoes. Mr A. H. Wall was appointed vice captain and matches were played during the next two years. In 1929 the club ran into financial difficulties and had to levy each member 3/- to repay the expenses of the club.</div><div>At the annual meeting held on 3 April 1930 a resolution was passed that the club go into recess and that Messrs E. Munday, D. Healy and A. Wall be trustees of the club's property until such time that the club could be reformed. The books and some equipment were placed in the custody of the president. The club has never been reformed.</div>

The first records of a cricket club being formed in the district was at Barabba in October 1873 when a meeting to form a club was called, possibly by Mr James Dow. The first matches were played on a piece of land which was the last of the present oval reserve on section 311 Hundred of Grace. Then the club moved to a piece of land on Mr James Dow's property south of his house.

In 1888 the club was given permission to clear land for an oval on the reserve whicn was south of the surveyed town of Aliceberg (Barabba) and this area became the place where all&nbsp; the sporting clubs played matches. The first match was played against Grace Plains. There is no record of the scores.

In 1874 the club had 38 members. Some members must have travelled long distances for a game of cricket. In 1877 it was decided to wear special caps of blue and white but it was only possible for two caps to be purchased in that colouring. The captain and secretary had the two special caps and the remainder of the team had plain blue caps.

There were several brothers named Dyer playing in the early days of the cricket club. They were considered good cricketers and also excelled at other sports. One brother, Mr Robert Dyer, later played for the South Adelaide cricket team and participated in several interstate matches. He also played one game against a visiting English team during the period from 1894 and 1895.&nbsp;

Mr Richard Butler, played for Barabba in 1907 and 1908 as a fast bowler. He was later to became a notable figure in the State when he entered politics and became Premier of South Australia.

During the years before World War I Barabba&nbsp; played cricket in the Federal Cricket Association and the the membership comprised of the following clubs: Alma Plains, Barabba, Boundary, Grace Plains, Owen. Later they played in the Lower Gilbert Cricket Association made up of teams from Hamley Bridge, Stockport, Tarlee, Alma, Barabba, Giles Corner. The membership was altered when Giles Corner withdrew and Wasleys was admitted and then several years before World War II Owen became a new inclusion in the&nbsp; association.

Barabba had acricket team from 1874 until 1975 with the exception of the time of the two World Wars when the club went into recess.

Barabba Cricket Club played for many years in the Lower Gilbert Cricket Association and Barabba maintained a cricket team until the early 1970s. In 1974 Barabba amalgamated with Owen and cricket was played for several years as the Owen-Barabba cricket team. This&nbsp; combined team was runner up in the Lower Gilbert Cricket Association in season 1974-75 and won the final in 1975-76. After that year the name of Barabba was not associated with a cricket club playing in the district.

A hundred years of cricket is a great achievement for the Settlement of Barabba.
The provision for a cemetery was made when the land was surveyed for the parkland and reserve area at Barabba. The grant of land was proclaimed and granted on 13th January 1875 and signed by the Governor of the state, Sir Anthony Musgrave and countersigned by William Everard, Commissioner of Crown Lands.

The first trustees were: James Harris of Hundred of Alma,Robert Dyer, George Fidge, James Hennessy,James Poulton and James Searl of Hundred of Grace, Edward Wall, James Dow and Alik Crawford of Hundred of Dalkey.

In April 1875 when James Harris became the first curator he called for tenders to fence the cemetery. The land contained in this area was cleared of vegetation while the surrounding scrub land was retained.

It is recorded in the lease book that Mr.Smith purchased the first burial allotment on 9th December 1875 and the second allotment to be purchased was recorded on the 22nd June 1876 by Mr. James Murch. Up until 1900 there had been 23 leases sold.

For over 90 years the management of the cemetery was carried out by the district residents regularly meeting to appoint the trustees and officers.

The cemetery in 2010 is under the Care and Control of the District Council of Mallala.
Wherever I go and ask people what is missing from their lives, the most common answer (if they are not impoverished or seriously ill) is "community." What happened to community, and why dont we have it any more? There are many reasons the layout of suburbia, the disappearance of public space, the automobile and the television, the high mobility of people and jobs and, if you trace the "whys" a few levels down, they all implicate the money system.
The filled bag of grain (wheat or barley) was sewn across the top nearly to the second ear. The bag filler was inserted as far as possible into the bag of grain. The cylindrical hopper was filled with grain from an excess supply and the half lid clamped down. Using a pumping action with the bag filler, more grain would be forced into the bag and the sewing of the top completed. The overall aim was to supply tightly filled bags of grain that would stack uniformly.

Description: A bag filler was manufactured from thin steel piping with Simpson Pty Ltd being a supplier. The top was a cylindrical hopper tapering to the pipe which was 3 feet long with a diameter of 2 1/2 inches. The top of the cylinder had a hinged half lid which could be clipped down whilst the other half of the lid was fixed. The bag filler needed to be made of light weight material for ease of handling eg. light galvanised steel down piping.

A modified version of the bag filler was made by Simpson Pty Ltd for the use of younger persons.

One such version was made for 11 year old Clem Pritchard of Windsor who was not strong enough to handle a full size bag filler. Clem left school at age 13 years and probably used the modified version until he was fully grown. Mr Clement Murray Pritchard enlisted in the Australian Army in World War 1 on 14 March 1916. He served with the 4th Field Ambulance and was Killed in Action in France on 21 October 1917.
When rain was forecast all members of the family were recruited to close up the bags so they could be put out of harms way. The tarpaulins could cover the bags if the weather was showery but heavy rain meant bags had to be quickly sewn and turned to prevent the damp grain from sprouting.

During his period of office,he, among other things, was instrumental in building up a strong Council road-making plant and for making a strong case to the State Government for financing the construction of the sealed road from Mallala to Two Wells, which, sadly, was not completed before his death.
His home was in Aerodrome road, a few doors away from the old Council Office. He was active in the community and was noted for his public-speaking ability and his deep sense of humour. We hold on to so many things that cause us a great deal of pain, stress and suffering and instead of letting them all go, instead of allowing ourselves to be stress free and happy we cling on to them. Not anymore. Starting today we will give up on all those things that no longer serve us, and we will embrace change. Ready? Here we go:
In 1933 Mr Arthur Weatherill built the Bakery shop at 5 Wasleys Road.

The shop was managed by Arthur's daughter Doreen, and her husband Ted Algar. Mr &amp; Mrs Algar later purchased the business and house.

In 1941 the RAAF Training Base had been established at Mallala and the Algars could see the need for bigger premises, and so the Bakery Shop was renovated.

The adjoining [[Weatherills Billiard Saloon|Billiard Saloon]] of Mr Weatherill was demolished, and a new shop was built on the site accessible to the Bakery Shop.

It opened as a 'Tea Room' serving morning and afternoon teas and light luncheons. It provided a place for servicemen and their wives and friends to relax and socialise away from the base.

The years were busy for the Algar family and staff as the bakery provided bread, pies and pasties etc. to the [[RAAF No. 6 Service Flight Training School|RAAF station to]] cater for the 2,000 personnel.

The bakery supplied 72 dozen pies and pasties daily, plus 100 dozen pastries were sold by a vendor at the main entrance gate each evening.

The Tea Rooms closed&nbsp;c. 1946, and the Algar family relinquished the Bakery Shop in 1979 when it was offered for lease and eventually sold in 1989.

Various leasees operated a Takeaway / Deli on these premises. with the business premises and adjoining house owned by Mr &amp; Mrs Ray Coleman. Today the business continues to thrive as Bellies takeaway.
Alf Huxtable contributed to the Mallala community in many ways. In the early days of the Mallala Football Club he was a player and an official for a&nbsp; number of years.

In 1923 he was appointed as an auxiliary fireman for the Fire Brigades Board of S.A., in charge of the Mallala Township unit. He held that position until his death in 1951.<br>He and his son C.W. ("Cam") Huxtable were in charge of the Township and Rural Fire Services for some&nbsp;50 years between them.

Alf Huxtable served the Mallala Institute as Secretary, Librarian and Caretaker&nbsp;from 1929 to 1951. He was a foundation member of the newly-established Mallala Bowling Club shortly after World War 2 and served as the greenkeeper. He was made a life member of the Club for his services. He was also a part-time employee with the District Council of Mallala, in charge of the public gardens in the township and the watering of new tree plantings in various streets and the Mallala Oval grounds.

As a former blacksmith, he had a colourful turn of phrase, which he could produce if he thought that someone was not "playing the game" or not contributing enough to the community. He could not understand why anyone would not want to give voluntarily to improve the community facilities. He did not suffer fools gladly.

Alf Huxtable was employed by East Bros&nbsp;&amp; Co.&nbsp;of Mallala for 50 years - 20 years as foreman.

The photograph of Railway Terrace shows the premises of East Bros &amp; Co. was across the Dublin Road from the Fire Station( the small shed in the foreground of the Mill). During the 1950s, Edinburgh air base had been established. Because the Mallala airfield was unsuitable for modern aircraft, the appropriate Minister decided to&nbsp;dispose of the land, hangars, houses and other buildings and equipment in 1960.

What an outcry this caused.

For the years of its operation, the RAAF base had boosted travel (the railway station platform had to be lengthened), had fully extended the school's capacity, had brought eager boarders and flat-seekers to the doorsteps of home owners, had swelled congregations, filled the Institute functions, and had enlivened local business.

In spite of the fact that some of the hangars were leased to the SA Co-operative Bulk Handling Co. to cope with the record grain harvests, the 871 acres was auctioned by Bennett and Fisher Ltd.

''The following story&nbsp;was&nbsp;written by Piet Van Den Berg, a relative of Adriaan Manschot''.

'''''Adriaan Manschot - Military Sergeant Airman of the M.L.D. (Dutch Marine Navy)'''''

Adriaan Manschot was one of the pilots of the Dutch MLD (Marine Navy) arriving at the Mallala RAAF training base on the 4th March 1942. Just five days later the Dutch Indies would surrender to the enemy invading their country. They were initially told to acquire more aircraft from Australia to be able to defend their country. Now they were stuck in Australia, a country which was threatened itself from the north. It never came that far fortunately. However on the 3rd March 1942, there was an attack on Dutch refugees in Broome, Western Australia, and 88 people died and at least 22 airplanes were destroyed.

Adriaan had been in the Dutch-Indies following the German invasion in Holland, beginning of May 1940. He enrolled for service in the MLD in England, and was transferred to the Dutch-Indies. The Japanese expansion in the Far East was of great concern, and the MLD was building up strength to withstand a possible attack. Adriaan acquired his first airman’s license in March 1941. Later he fulfilled service with airplane groups 2 and 5, equipped with Dornier 24 K seaplanes. They had different stations, but one of the last ones was at Tondano Lake, North Sulawesi. When the war started on the 8th of December 1941, he had to fly reconnaissance missions to monitor where the enemy was. At any price the oil wells of Tarakan should not fall into the hands of the enemy. When it became obvious that Tarakan was to be attacked, the oil pumps, pipes and equipment were destroyed in time. When the Dornier 24K seaplanes were attacked at the Tondano base, there was destruction, and there were wounded crewmembers. Adriaan went into the water while under attack of enemy fire and rescued a few of them. Later he managed to travel back to Surabaya airbase Morokrembangan, which at that time was near the seaport Tanjung Perak. On the 19th of February a large group of MLD personnel was evacuated by ship ss “Tsjinegara”. That ship managed to arrive safely in South Australia on the 4th of March 1942. The port of Adelaide was entered and a large number of the dutch pilots were stationed at Mallala. Although the purpose was that training would commence in the first place, it was than decided to move to the USA, where training facilities at the RNMFS (Royal Netherlands Military Flying School) would take over. Afterwards many of these trained pilots ended up in the Pacific theatre to fight against the Japanese on B-25 Mitchells, others, like Adriaan, became a pilot in Squadron 320, which operated first from England, and later from Melsbroek (Belgium), in the European theatre.

Adriaan Manschot died during a mission when another plane hit his, while he was in front position of the formation. His tail section broke off, and the plane crashed near Tienen, Belgium. That was on the 9th of February 1945. Adriaan Manschot was born on the 10th of May 1916 in the little village of Jaarsveld, along the River Lek. They were known to be a smart family, always looking for business, and their character was sort of courageous. Some acquired higher positions in companies.
When Mr Mick Cope sold the business, in 2002, the new owners used the premises for a private home.

In 2007 the District Council of Mallala purchased the building and it remained vacant until it demolished in 2009 by the Council.

The area was levelled and rubbled to accommodate a building which is used as office space by the council. A car park for Council Staff has been located on the site.

There has been consultation with the community for the development on the site.
Between March&nbsp;and May of 2010 there was great activity on the site. A rotunda with seating was set in pride of place surrounded by a paved area,&nbsp;then landscaped garden beds were placed around the perimeter. A low wall built from the limestone and red brick retrieved when the building was demolished makes a focal point.

A ceremony was held on May 24th 2010 with Mayor Strudwicke officiating to declare open for public use this attractive area.

Mr Dean Reid and Mrs Beverly Roney, children of former&nbsp;shop owner&nbsp;Mr J.C.K.
