The Australian Red Cross Society was formed in Melbourne on August 13th 1914 pledging itself to the care of sick and injured of all nations, whether friend or foe.
By September 9th, within weeks of the Declaration of war, a meeting was held in Mallala to form a local sub branch of the Red Cross Society.
Over 50 ladies attended and a small committee was established. The first President was Mrs J. Nairn of Grace Plains with Mesdames G.A. Morphett and A. Moody as Vice Presidents, Mrs C. Player as Secretary and Mrs R.F. Williams as Treasurer. The committee included Mesdames A. Dunstan, J. Hill, T. Worden, D. Fahey, H. Lutt, G. Lindsay, H. Jury and D. Horan.
Plans were quickly arranged for a Patriotic Demonstration on the 16th September at the Mallala Park and a fund raising concert on 30th September 1914.
Similar activities were taking place in towns throughout the district.
